Your guide to All-Star weekend

February 13th, 2004 by aswitzer

This is your viewing guide to the 2004 All-Star game this weekend, with a Denver Nuggets slant.

Friday Night

Friday night, Carmelo Anthony and Nene will be participating in the “Rookie Challenge”. The game starts at 7:00PM MT on TNT. This is the first time the event will be played during primetime viewing on Friday night.

Ming Yao and the Nuggets own Nene head the Sophomore team, while Carmelo Anthony and LeBron James headline the Rookie team.

Saturday Night

The evening kicks off in the best possible manner for a Denver Nuggets fan – a one hour All-Access pass to the Denver Nuggets airs on TNT at 3:00 PM MT. The special is taken from the highlights of the series that aired on NBA-TV earlier this year. The Nuggets organization opened up their training camp and preseason to cameras to give viewers a glimpse into the forming of this year’s squad. This is a can’t miss event for any Nuggets fan – setup your Tivo or VCR now!

Starting at 6:30 MT, several events will air on TNT. Specific times are not given.

The Three-Point Shootout will feature Denver’s Voshon Lenard – one of the league’s premier shooters. Vo has already made 72 triples this year, behind only Peja Stojakovic and Chauncey Billups. Cuttino Mobley, Rashard Lewis, and Kyle Korver round out the other participants. Stojakovic is aiming for a third straight crown, but if Vo gets hot -watch out!

The Skills Challenge is a relatively new event (first time last year) and Denver’s Earl Boykins was picked for this year’s 4 man field. Gary Payton, Baron Davis, and Stephon Marbury and the other 3 point guards ready to put on a show. Payton was the runner-up last year to Jason Kidd, who is not participating this year. Earl has incredible skills that should translate well to the obstacle course that contains dribbling, passing, and shooting stations. This event will also occur on Saturday night, but its not clear in what order.

The main event, the Slam Dunk competition will most likely air last on TNT during Saturday night’s coverage. Denver’s Chris Andersen aka, “Birdman” will participate. Rounding out the foursome are Ricky Davis from Boston, Fred Jones from Indiana, and Jason Richardson (2-time defending champ) from Golden State. Chris has the disadvantage of being the tallest participant at 6’10, but he has incredible hops and a quirky personality that help him surprise the judges and his competition. Go Birdman!

Sunday Night

No Nuggets players were picked for this year’s main event, even though Carmelo Anthony received strong consideration after leading the Nuggets to 31 victories before the All-Star break, and was favored to make the team by many media experts. (Magic Johnson, Kenny Smith and Charles Barkley to name a few) Andre Miller also was given consideration after a stellar first half of the season, and being a huge factor in the Nuggets turn-around. The 31 wins before the break were the most the Nuggets have had since 1986. If the Nuggets finish the season playing just .500 ball – they will have had the 3rd biggest turn-around ever in the NBA. With Carmelo getting better each game, look for the Nuggets to do even better than that.

So, enjoy the main event – the NBA All-Star Game at 6:45 MT on TNT. The one positive thing that can be send about the Nuggets having no representatives this year is that they play great team ball – fun to watch, and not dependent on any one player to win games.

Great synopsis! I will Tivo most of it. Let me know if you miss anything.

As much as I’m going to enjoy all of this (the Tivo is ready), the best part of all-star weekend is that the Nuggets managed to show up for the Portland game on Thursday. 31-23 and Nuggets in all but one event makes all-star weekend a whole lot of fun.
