My original story was going to be about Carmelo Anthony’s trip to the Olympics, but with recent actions and his actions at the Olympics I changed the angle of this article. Anthony, after leading the Nuggets to the playoffs has had a rough off-season. His troubles actually started last year with a supposed conflict with point guard Andre Miller and then late last season he refused to reenter a game against Detroit. All of these actions have gotten the media started. “Is Anthony a good player with a bad attitude?” “Anthony doesn’t deserve Rookie of the Year with his bad attitude.” “Anthony is in trouble again.” Are these the actions of a player with a bad attitude? Or are these the action of a 20-year old, who is adjusting to real life and to the big leagues?
His problems at the Olympics started when he guaranteed the US team would win the Gold. That statement upset many members of the US team and gave opposing teams (Argentina, Lithuania…) fire power. It was an uncalled for statement, that upset many of teammates and backfired when the Dream Team won the Bronze. It was an immature statement that was made by a 20-year old star. Now name any other 20 year old who isn’t immature?
He began his experience in Athens on a high-note, he led the US team in scoring (17.1 points) during the exhibition games. Than when real play started he lost his playing time (19 minutes during the Olympics) and started to get frustrated. He pouted when he didn’t play and when he did play he started to jack up jumpers and didn’t dig in on defense. His frustration affected him as a teammate, when he didn’t play, he didn’t help the team at practice or didn’t support his teammates when they played. His actions led to him being in Coach Larry Brown’s doghouse and a spot on the end of the bench. His actions are the same as any 20 years old, who has been the number one player on every team his whole life and never had to be a role player. He did buy into the team concept later in the Olympics and started to cheer for his team. That experience should help him be a better player and teammate.
Last month Anthony had another growing pain. He was supposedly involved in a scuffle in a club when he was with his new girlfriend, La-La from MTV. Her ex-boyfriend Sugar Ray supposedly spit in La-La’s face and Anthony started a fight with Sugar Ray and his entourage. Supposedly chairs were thrown over and the club was trashed. The true story is unknown, but reports from the Club owner, Anthony and Sugar Ray, said the incident was over exaggerated. There was a minor disagreement and the club was fine and so was Anthony, his girlfriend and everybody else involved.
So now throughout the league Anthony has a rap of a bad character, and he also his bad attitude affects his team and teammates. I believe with all of the events last year and this summer will help him be a better player. He is turning 20 years old and is a year wiser in the league. Now think of when you were 20 and compare that to Anthony’s situation.
