McCloud traded for Whitney

October 24th, 2002 by aswitzer

Today, Kiki pulled another trade. This time, it was George McCloud going to Washington for veteran point guard Chris Whitney. The trade had been rumoured since last night, and McCloud had not played in the last couple of preseason games.

Whitney is entering his 10th season, Chris averaged 10.2 pts, and 3.8 assists per game last season. He also shot over 40% from behind the 3-point arc last year. Chris will battle Kenny Satterfield for the starting point guard position with just one preseason game remaining.

With this trade, the only remaining players on the roster since before Kiki became the GM are James Posey and Ryan Bowen. It’s Kiki’s team.

Best deal the Nugs have made this year McCloud for Whitney! This about finishes the housecleaning doesn`t it?

Pretty much! A thorough job, for sure. With only Bowen and Posey left, you would piss off a lot of fans if you traded Bowen (probably as much as if they let Rocky the mascot go!) and I would hate to see him hussle against us for every loose ball playing for another team. Posey – will this is his year to make or break himself – he’s show signs, but never played a solid year from beginning to end. I think he’s got it in him, and we sure need a stellar year from him this season.

Well, let’s get one thing straight — if somehow we could fast forward this season and go directly to next years draft and free agent signings, all us Nuggets fans would. All we need to do this year is be bad enough and have a little lottery luck to get Lebron James. Chris Whitney? Sure it’s an improvement, but who cares? I’m more interested in Nene, Tskitishvili, and Rodney White. All Kiki is doing is throwing together one roster of potential and waiting to see what stars fall out. Every guy on this roster (except Bowen, Camby, and Howard — they are what they are) could be a star or bust. Chris Whitney is the exception — he simply makes us slightly better than terrible this year. And by the way, nice site my friend — us Nuggets fans (limited as we are) do appreciate it.

Okay, but the fans that have season tickets this year do care, and since we don’t have TIVO technology at the Pepsi Center, I’m glad Kiki picked up Whitney. I think he’s worth at least at least an extra 6-8 wins this year, and that should be enough to avoid setting any records of futility. I think we at least have to go into next year with some hope and confidence based on what happens this year. So I agree that next year is huge for all of us (limited!) Nuggets fans, but there is a little riding on this year also. Thanks for the props.

You’re right, and I’ll be watching the game on TNT on Thursday — just saying I’m looking forward to the offseason. I didn’t want to give the impression that I think the Nuggets should dump the season — can’t really respect a team that does that. Plus, as I was reminded the other day, even if we do finish last, we only have a 25% chance of winning the LeBron James Sweepstakes.
